2013 Gasparilla Pirate Fest

Tampa Florida, January 26, 2013

English: This photograph is of the main pirate...

Arrrgh! Time to practice up for talking like a pirate.

Start the day with the Gasarilla Invasion as the Jose Gasparill sails into Hillsborough Bay. Expect cannons and a large fleet of escort vessels.

After the invasion is the Gasparilla Invasion Brunch where the mayor turns over the keys to the city.

Another highlight is the Parade of Pirates, much like Mardi Gras but with everyone dressed as Pirates.

Spend the evening at the Pirate Fest Street Festival for good times, good food and great music.

Sora San Diego Restaurant: Uni Comes Alive

Uni from sea urchins

Uni is truly one of the culinary delights to come out of the Japanese kitchen. Pronounced oo-nee, uni is the edible part of the sea urchin that produces milt or roe. Some of the best uni in the world comes from Southern California, especially around the month of December.

The best restaurant in San Diego serving a number of uni dishes is Sora Restaurant in the downtown Marina District on Broadway.

Samplings from the menu include:

Uni Crudo which is live sea urchin served with lemon juice, sea salt and olive oil;

Uni Pizza with tomato sauce, uni, baby bokchoy, ricotta burrata and fried sage leaves;

Uni with Sweet Corn, parmigiano and chive oil;

Uni Apricot Jam, live sea urchin with apricot jam, orange mousse and aged balsamic vinegar;

Uni and Crab with a garlic and negi-miso sauce, edamame puree on fusilli di Gragnano.

Oh, did I mention that uni is widely thought to be an aphrodisiac? You will love the light, sweet briny flavor of uni and you will love what Sora Restaurant brings to San Diego.
